Women of the Bible: Eve: The Mother of mankind
I have grown up in a church. I have grown up with sword drills and getting stickers for memorizing long passages of scripture. Sadly through the endless vacation Bible schools or Sunday school classes that I sat through or now teach about 90% of what is taught is focused on godly men. Understandably, due to the nature of the time and the impact that many of the famous stories picked (who would chose the story of Dorcas over David and Goliath when you’re teaching eight year olds?), however, due to the current times where girls are subjected to so much hardship and self-hate I think it’s time for a change. Being a girl is hard, always was and always will be. Some of the pain and hardship is required-we can thank Eve for that- but other pain we bring down on ourselves because we play the game the way the world wants us to. We doubt God’s faithfulness and we decide to operate under another playbook.
- Where did Women come from?
- Made from Adam’s rib; not his head or his foot (which would have proven significant for hierarchical reasons)
- Made from his rib- from his side under his arm (protection) and near his heart (to be loved)
- Human beings were “formed” rather than created or made: this appears to show an intentional and focused process
- Eve: means-“to breathe” (From the Hebrew name chawah or chayah which means “to live”)
- Eve is one of the few people who got to physically walk with God (she was important enough that the Devil personally went to her and tempted her into sin)
- Women like Men were made in God’s image and were “formed” with Care and Intention
- Eve was created for harmony and companionship not shame
- What does it mean to be “made in God’s image?”
- The Fall of Man into Sin
- Who do we typically blame for the fall? What do you believe?
- What actually happened? What is written in the Bible?
- Are we really any different from Eve? Do we expect to have done anything different had it been us in the garden?
- What do you think the consequences mean? What does it mean to be made submissive? Could this be seen as a blessing? Does that mean we have to be timid or weak?
What can we learn from Eve’s mistake?
2 Corinthians 11:3 “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
